Townsend's Solitaire Sighting

This Sunday morning, February, 6, 9:00 A.M., the Townsend's solitaire,  which I saw, was still at it's usual location at  the corner of Northrup and Fair avenue near the juniper shrubs  in Marquette.

Swans & Such

I went back to Trout Lake today and found not only the 4 trumpeter swans again, 2 black ducks, and 4 golden-eye, but I found 4 more trumpeters on the North upper ponds. I also found a wild turkey in the fields west of the AuTrain basin. Nice back woods skiing right now.

Kingfisher, Evening Grosbeaks

On Saturday morning I saw a Belted Kingfisher circling high over the west end of the Indiana Mine, at the Fumee Lake Natural Area (near Iron Mountain). I was also pleased to find a flock of 13 Evening Grosbeaks (10 male, 3 female) feeding in a sumac tree near the east entrance to Fumee.

Other notable finds were a few Pine Siskins and a pair of Red-bellied Woodpeckers. I had 13 species in all, which is very good for a mid-winter hike in the woods.

Northern Shrike

Zach Gayk and I spent the day birding the Stonington Peninsula in Delta Co. today. The birding was pretty sparse but we did have a light phase Rough-legged Hawk and 4 Northern Shrikes. I had a 5th Northern Shrike in Marquette on US-41 just west of Front Street on my way home. Northern Shrikes seem to be pretty common this winter. I have seen another four Shrikes in the last week, mostly in Skandia and southern part of Marquette County.

Varied Thrush, Bohemian Waxwings, Solitaire

The varied thrush is still present at Ginnie Rinne's house, the first on the left side of Sand River Road, Alger Co. south of M-28. It can be seen coming to the feeders in front of the house and can be observed from the driveway. Best time is 9-10 AM. A flock of about a dozen bohemian waxwings were seen along M-28 between Lakewood Lane and 1735 M-28. A wild turkey was also seen east of there on M-28 just past the end of the 2300's on M-28. No word yet on the Townsend's solitaire today - several downstate birder's are looking today, so say "Hi" to Steve Santer and Jim Dawe if you see them.
