Solitaire Saturday
|
2/12/05 I found the Townsend's Solitaire this afternoon, about 5:15 pm near the corner of 8th and Kaye in Marquette. It was perched near the top of a birch tree in front of some large pines behind the house on the N.W. corner. This is around the block from the Fair and Northrup location, one block east and one block south.

Marq. Birds 2/12
|
Zach Gayk and I had a productive boreal bird hike this afternoon along the Peshekee Grade Rd. We had 4 Boreal Chickadees, 50+ White-winged Crossbills, a couple of Pine Grosbeaks, 1 Black-backed Woopecker, 8 Grey Jays, GC Kinglets and a Brown Creeper I also stopped and checked the lower Harbor gulls and had 3 Glaucous Gulls. I have begun to see the first signs of spring. One of the Grey Jays was carrying nesting material and on the rocks in the lower harbor, Herring Gulls have begun to set up territory on the rocks. Snowy Owl
|
2/11/05 Just observed female snowy owl in the Park Cemetery, Marquette, south side, at 8:00A.M., Friday. When I left it, it was sitting on a tombstone just after flying out of a tree. Enter cemetery from 7th St., turn immediate left, follow road south along pond on right, then a right turn heading west and take first road right heading north. Trees to the left are where I saw it, across from the pond on the right. Good birding! Louie Taccolini |

Pileated
|
2/9/05 I was starting to worry, but the Pileated Woodpecker came to our suite feeder today at 12:15 at Raymbault Drive in Marquette. Always flies off in the southwest direction. Must live over there somewhere.

Speaking of Robins
|
2/7/05 Hi all. I had a robin perched in the tree in front of our house all day. It flew down to our bushes periodically, and I'm not sure, but may be trying to eat the holly berries there. We also have some yews at the side of the house, but no berries that I can tell on those. Did robins get fooled into coming back early do you think? What a shock if they did. I have a platform feeder that I put some raisins and something I bought at Mares-E- Doats that is supposed to be food for fruit eating birds...but I'm not sure the birds are eating any of that. They go to that feeder, but I think they are taking some sunflower seeds or peanuts. Can't be sure. Hope the little robins will find enough to keep going until they can resume their usual diet. Makes me want to find a bait shop and put out some worms. Nancy |

On returning home, my wife told me she watched a robin in the yard eating crab apples. from 3:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.The location is just south of the Park Cemetery.

LWAS February Meeting

Laughing Whitefish Audubon Society February Meeting: Program on the Central U.P. Land Conservancy
On Wednesday, February 9, the Laughing Whitefish Audubon Society will host a program about the Central Lake Superior Land Conservancy, presented by Heidi Volkhardt, Protection Coordinator. The program will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room of Peter White Library in Marquette. The CLSLC is a non-profit organization located in Marquette, with a service area that includes Marquette, Alger, and Baraga Counties. Topics for the presentation include the CLSLC's mission, why land in the UP should be protected and how to protect it, and current projects, such as riparian habitat restoration. Volkhardt will also discuss how other land trusts around Lake Superior are protecting the Lake Superior Basin. Finally, she will let us know about an opportunity for Audubon members to attend a snowshoe fieldtrip at the Ford Eagle Preserve in western Marquette County --a great opportunity for birding. For information, call 226-6749 (evenings). |
