Snowy Owl
|
Friday evening, around 5:30 to 6:15PM, a snowy owl was observed in the top of a spruce tree at the south side of the Park Cemetary, not far from Louie Taccolini's house. It then flew over the downtown toward the lower harbor, destination unknown.

Northern Saw-whet Owl
|
Zach and I had good birding today along the west branch of the Escanaba River, just west of the Dickinson County line. The highlight was a Northern Saw-whet Owl. It was right along the road in a jack pine and was being mobbed by nuthatches and chickadees, but it didn't seem to mind. It wasn't afraid of us, either. Zach got some good pictures which he will try to post on the upbirders web site.
We also did well with Red Crossbills (about 20-30 of them) and White-winged Crossbills (about 35 total, mostly in one big flock). Other notables were Northern Shrike, Gray Jay, Boreal Chickadee, and Brown Creeper.

Townsend's Solitaire/Varied Thrush
|
1/27/2005 There is a Townsend's Solitaire on the south side of NMU campus here in Marquette. I saw the bird around 2 this afternoon. The bird is with a robin feeding in the Juniper bushs in the front yard of the house on the coner of Fair and Northop. This is across the street from NMU. The Varied Thrush is still present in Alger County at the Sand River location as of today. Good Birding ~Skye Haas |

Hoary Redpolls
|
Skye Haas and I observed 2 Hoary Redpolls in southern Marquette Co. (at at feeder along County Road 557). These birds were feeding with a flock of 50+ Common Redpolls. Also in the nearby area were Merlin, multiple Pine Grosbeaks, and several Gray Jays. In addition, we also saw 1 Red-tailed Hawk, and two Northern Shrikes.
Much of the day was spent driving around the Western U.P. (Gogebic, Iron, and Ontonagon counties) in search of northern owls, but we did not find any. Zach Gayk |
