Townsend's Solitaire, Marq. Co 2/14
|
2/14/05 The Solitaire invasion of the U.P. continues. I just came home to a Townsend's Solitaire in my yard (yard bird #90!).
Despite being only a few blocks away from the previous Solitaire location, this is a new bird. Today's bird clearly has duller wingbars and a much longer tail. The Fair/Northrop Street bird has a very short tail (for a Solitaire) with little white on the tail. It was first in the bushes behind my birdfeeders. It spent about 20 minutes flying around mine and the neighbor's yards. I lost it when it flew northwest into some cedars behind my house.
I live on Sherman St. just north of Sheridan St. Also look behind my block at the intersection of Sheridan and Cleveland. Thats the only spot on the block that has fruit trees that still have berries. I don't think the Solitaire will stay long in my yard. The Bohemian Waxwings did a good job of clearing out the fruit a month ago. I'll post updates as needed. The other Solitaire was last seen on Saturday. Also today there were 6 Glaucous Gulls in the lower harbor. Good Birding ~Skye Haas |

Gray-Crowned Rosy-Finch, Chippewa Co. 2/13
|
2/13/05 I was lucky enough to observe a Grey-Crowned Rosy-finch at Betty Maxson's home near Paradise, Chippewa County. It is a very beautiful adult male coming to Betty's feeders along with large numbers of Redpolls and Pine Grosbeaks. Birders are welcome to come see this very rare bird (3rd or 4th Michigan State record). Mornings and early afternoons are probably the best times to see this bird. I will post updates as they come. Hopefully this bird will stick around for a while.
Betty lives on Lost Lake Road 7 miles west of Paradise. Lost Lake Road is on the south side of M-123. Go down Lost Lake RD. 3/4 of a mile. On the left hand side of the road is a large white sign that says MAXSON. pull into the driveway in-between the house and the shed. The feeders are to the back of the house. Good Luck ~Skye Haas |

Marquette Sunday
|
2/13/05 On a quick check around town at noon today, for those needing a Canada goose or black duck fix, the north end of Granite Street at the Dead River in Marquette Township off Wright Street is the place to go. Also, in the brush across the river were a pair of pine siskins and a song sparrow. A large herd of A. goldfinches were at feeders and in white birches from 8th to Northrop Streets on W. Fair - over 100. A flock of 60 c. redpolls at feeders near McCarty Cove at same time today too. Scot Stewart |

Snowy Owl, Marquette
|
2/12/05 A quick stop at Marquette's lower harbor on the way to dinner this evening paid off with a Snowy Owl. An immature was sitting on top of the breakwater about 30 feet past the main warning light. Scott Hickman |
