Vesper Sparrow, Rusty Blackbird, Eastern Meadowlark, etc.

4/10/05
Birded Fumee Lake (near Iron Mountain) Saturday morning, and had some nice
returning birds, including Vesper Sparrow and Eastern Meadowlark, both of
which were singing. Using the term "singing" more loosely, I also had the
privilege of listening to a couple of Rusty Blackbirds. In a 3-1/2 hour
walk I tallied 43 species. (Exactly three weeks earlier, I took the same
walk in a snowstorm and tallied 7 species.)

This morning near Quinnesec I had a pair of Hermit Thrushes and a Red-headed
Woodpecker.

Golden-crowned Kinglet - Miner's Falls

4/9/05
Friday afternoon around 5:00 we pished in a male golden-crowned kinglet as well as our normal inquisitive friends, Black capped chickadees, along the south side of the trail to Miner's Falls about 50 feet from the top of the stairs.  Lots of new Pileated activity with fresh chips at the base of many trees along the trail.  The falls are absolutely beautiful with a large  bridge of ice still spanning the top.

Zach Gayk and I spent a few hours looking for migrating Hawks on the ridge above Harlow Lake (north of Marquette, off the 550).

Northern Goshawk -1
unidentfied accipiter -1
Red-shouldered Hawk -1
Red-tailed Hawk -2
Bald Eagle -4
Merlin -1
A new migrant today was Tree Swallow, which seems a bit early to me.

Yellow-rumped Warbler & Glaucous Gull, Alger Co.

4/7/05
I was happy to bump into my first Alger County Yellow-rumped Warbler of the spring.  It was hawking insects from off of the bridge that crosses Stutt's Creek while a pair of Hooded Mergansers were swimming under it.

Also, there was a first or second year Glaucous Gull in with approx. 500 herrings near the paper mill on the east side of Munising.  A Merlin, Eastern Phoebe, and Sandhill Crane were calling in Shelter Bay, and Winter Wrens were singing whenever I was in appropriate habitat.  A Northern Harrier was hunting over the dunes near the mouth of the AuTrain River.  A Killdeer was also at this location.

Yesterday I heard my first Sandhill Crane flying over my house on 16 Mile Lake Road, and today I woke to a robin singing in the yard. Yup, it's official now, spring is here.

WPBO 4/1

4/1/05
Well despite much searching by many birders (including myself and Zack Gayk) the Mountain Bluebird at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory was NOT relocated today. (sigh...)

The day was not a complete bust though. Many new spring migrants were seen today, and the hawk flight at Whitefish was pretty good. I had 2 American Woodcocks on the drive over, 1 in Marquette and one in Chippewa County.

There were alot of Pine Grosbeaks, Redpolls and Bohemian Waxwings on the point along with 3 Hoary Redpolls at the WPBO feeders. The following is a includes most but not all the hawk totals for the day.

Bald Eagle -5+
Golden Eagle -2+
Red-tailed Hawk -19 (including 1 dark morph)
Red-shoulderd Hawk -2
Northern Harrier -3
Northern Goshawk -4
Merlin -1

On the drive back to Marquette we had a Rough-legged Hawk on M-123 in Luce county, A Northern Shrike in Seney and in Munsing, we saw Scott's Shrike at the DNR launch site along with a 1st winter Glaucous Gull and a Great Blue Heron.

Not a bad day if one doesn't think too much about the Bluebird.

A Northern Shrike was hunting in the shrubs just to the west of the dock that is on the east side of the paper mill in Munising this afternoon.  Also present were a few Snow Buntings, a Common Merganser, and the usual contingent of Herring Gulls and ice fishermen.
