Coot, Sandpiper, Falcon
|
5/5/05 The south wind blew some nice birds into the city of Marquette this evening. I had an American Coot floating on the Shiras Pool at Presque Isle (right near the edge--very easy to overlook). I believe this is the first coot I've ever seen in Marquette County.
An Upland Sandpiper was foraging in the field just south of that medical research center at the corner of Lakeshore and Hawley. This was my first non-Killdeer shorebird of the year.
A few minutes later, a probable Peregrine Falcon flew overhead. Unfortunately, my binoculars were in my backpack at the time (I was riding my bike), and in the few seconds it took me to get them out the bird had flown too far away for a positive I.D. It flew low over the lake, toward the Picnic Rocks.
When I was on the Lower Harbor breakwall, a Blue-winged Teal flew past. Greg-- |

5/4/05 While having my morning cup, I was treated to a perched northern harrier awaiting his morning meal, as he surveyed his territory on the south side of the Hoist Dam in Negaunee township.....beautiful! Dick Motta |

Loon Migration
|
5/4/05 I spent a little bit time this morning on the north end of Presque Isle park in Marquette. Lots of loons were flying by. In a 45 minute timespan I counted 111 Common Loons and 19 Red-throated Loons going by. I wish I had the time to stay longer to see how many would move today.
Virtually no other waterbirds were moving this morning. ~Skye Haas |

Trumpeters
|
5/2/05 This morning the naturekids and I saw 3 trumpeters on the pond beside (north of) M94, just east of Forest Lake, one taking off. 30 minutes later, only two remained. I drive by there a lot and haven't seen the species on that pond ever before, so maybe it's a fluke. Janel Crooks |

Sunday a.m. visit to Presque Isle
|
5/1/05 Raven and I paid a visit to Presque Isle today between the hours of 8 a.m. and noon. Upon parking at the board walk area we were greeted by a group of eleven Turkey Vultures heading north along the ridge. We saw a similar group of TVs as we were about to exit just before the precip began. This group of (8) was accompanied by a single Merlin doing its best to let them know of its presence, either in sport or seriousness. It actually was seen to hit one of the TV's with no apparent affect. Balance of our list follows: Song Sparrow, Black-capped Chickadee, Common Flicker, Hairy Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, American Goldfinch, Purple Finch, House Finch, Northern Cardinal, American Robin, Bluejay, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Ring-billed Gull, Herring Gull, Brown Creeper, American Crow, Common Raven, Horned Grebe (7), Eared Grebe (7), Common Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, Canada Geese, Mallard, Common Loon.
An additional note, for Greg Clreary: we saw an immature Broad-winged Hawk along the boardwalk at Presque Isle on Friday.

N. Pintail, Alger Co.
|
5/1/05 Greg Cleary and I encountered a pair of N. Pintail on the eastern pool of the sewage lagoons in Chatham this morning. Other than that, hours of birding produced a lot of fun, but no unusual birds. Scott |

Returning Warblers
|
4/30/05 I hiked the Wetmore/Little Presque/Harlow Lake loop north of Marquette this morning, and got 40 species, including 3 Yellow-rumped Warblers and 3 Pine Warblers. Also of note were a pair of Horned Grebes in Lake Superior, a pair of Hooded Mergansers in a small stream, 11 Ring-necked Ducks on Harlow Lake, and a lone Broad-winged Hawk near Wetmore Pond. Greg |
