Audubon Field Trip

HAWK WATCHING IN THE KEWEENAW

I will be leading a Laughing Whitefish Audubon Society field trip to Brockway Mountain in the Keweenaw for a day of Hawk watching the last weekend of April.
Because good hawk watching conditions are very weather dependent, I have not yet set a particular date yet. It will be the last weekend of April, either on Saturday the 29th, or Sunday the 30th. I will send a second email with the actual date and trip details the weekend before the 29th.

If the weather is going to be bad- rain, snow and screaming north winds all make for lousy hawk watching, I will cancel the trip, no point in making the long trek to the Keweenaw if there will be no birds flying.

Due to the distance involved and the possibility of a weather cancellation, I would like to have all participants register with me so I can set up car pools and be able to contact you in case of cancellation. There is no fee for this trip and it is open to the public, you don't have to be a member of the Audubon Society to attend, though please if you would consider donating some gas money to the person who is your driver to Brockway.

To register just send me an email letting me know you plan on attending.

Hope to see you on the Mountain!

Annual Sandhill Crane Count - Marquette

The annual Sandhill Crane count (and any Whooping Cranes, too) will take place April 22 this year. This is an annual event that the International Crane Foundation, located in Baraboo, Wisconsin holds. County coordinators in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota organize local birders to find and count as many cranes as can be located. Sightings and vocalizations are used to confirm the location of individual birds, flocks, and breeding pairs.

Marquette County birders have participated for a number of years. Site selections will be discussed at the LWAS March general meeting, and final arrangements made at the April meeting.

For more information contact Bruce Ventura, the Marquette County Coordinator.
