LWAS Field Trip - Big Bay & Yellow Dog Plains, Oct. 7, 2006

Howdy Folks,
Greg Cleary & I will be leading a LWAS field trip this Saturday (the 7th) to Big Bay & the Yellow Dog Plains. Big Bay can be a great place to bird at this time of year, with the possibility of finding both interesting waterbirds and passerines. We will be checking both Lake Independence and the Big Bay for loons, grebes & ducks sitting on the water and then head over to the Lighthouse to see if anything is migrating over Lake Superior. We will also check out the coastline in a few spots for sparrows and other lingering songbirds. From there, people will have the choice to cash it in, or head on to the Yellow Dog Plains. A wild and remote area, we may find some boreal species like Grey Jay, Boreal Chickadee and Spruce Grouse. Hopefully some finches will be around as well. This is an interesting time of year in northern Marquette County and there is always the possibility of finding a real rarity. A Pacific Loon was found in Big Bay at this time last year, and there have already been 6 Jaegers seen at the Big Bay Lighthouse this year. In October 2004, both Townsend’s Solitaire and White-fronted Goose were seen on the Yellow Dog Plains so who knows what we may turn up!
We will be meeting at 7 AM at our usual meeting site at the corner of Spring & 4th Streets in Marquette. Bring a bag lunch, and if you plan on driving, make sure you get gas and supplies in town, as there is very little in Big Bay. There will be some hiking in a few different locations, and the weather can be a bit cool and wet at this time of year so dress accordingly.

LWAS Field Trip -- Aug. 26 Keweenaw Shorebirds

Howdy Folks,
I wanted to put the word out that I will be leading a field trip to the Keweenaw for a day of shorebirding. We will be hitting the a few of the Keweenaw sewage lagoons and will also bird a few spots along the the coast like Ojibway Beach, the head of the K. Bay and perhaps Arnheim. Because the days emphasis will be on observing shorebirds, you should bring a scope if you have one. Don't worry if you don't own a scope though, we shall just have to do as friends do and share.
If you would like to attend this outing, please respond to this email so I can see how many drivers we need for car-pooling. If you would be willing to drive, please let me know in your response.
There is no fee for this trip, but I do ask that if you are riding up with someone, please consider giving them a little gas money for for the long drive to the Keweenaw.
This will be an all day trip, so bring a lunch. We will be doing some walking and standing in the sun (or rain) for periods of time so plan accordingly.
We will be meeting at 6 AM at the DeFant Building at the corner of 4th & Spring on Saturday, August 26th. For our friends from the Keweenaw who would like to join us, we will make the L'Anse harbor our first stop at around 7:15-7:30.
