Presque Isle Bird Walks
|
Each month from May – October, the Laughing Whitefish Audubon Society sponsors a guided bird-walk at Presque Isle Park in Marquette. The walks are led by Greg Cleary and begin at 8:00 a.m. in the parking lot of the Bog Walk. They are open to the general public and are free of charge. This is a public service of LWAS to promote interest in birding, as well as interest in birding habitat and the environment.
May's walk will take place on Sunday, May 14. Subsequent walks will be held monthly on the second Saturday of the month: June 10, July 8, August 12, September 9, and October 14. Walks cover a variety of habitat, including the bog walk, the wooded area at the center of Presque Isle, and the lakeshore. Participants may leave or join the walk at any time.
For information on the walks, contact Greg Cleary |

Short-tailed Hawk at Whitefish Point
|
Karl Bardon and Ken Mettie Jr. found a SHORT-TAILED HAWK at Whitefish Point the morning of November 19, 2005. The bird was hanging around the parking lot and Hawk Dune.
The Short-tailed Hawk reappeared around 11:30 the morning of November 20, and flew around the point, for at least two hours. Great looks were obtained from the Hawk Platform and a group of birders watched it hunting as it moved across the Point.
It is an adult Light Morph bird and several photos were obtained. There is a photo of this bird posted in the U.P. Birders 2005 Photo Album (click the link at the top of this page to go to our album page.) |
